I don't believe it is a closed-headphone.

| Mitsugi_J's Full Review: Beyerdynamic DT-831 Consumer Headphones |
The sound is very impressive. I was looking for a headphones that would bring nice sound with my Panasonic portable cd player. Also, it should be worth to be kept for long time after I upgrade my system. The headphones brings really clear and dynamic sound in any range of music. The comfort is superb and gives no fatigue; I can even sleep wearing it. Though I like the great sound that the most of the famous open headphones (Sennheiser, Grado or so on) can bring, the limited range of isolation sometimes requires me to turn volume up in loud environment. However, the DT831 always provides me with nice surrounding in such loud environment as a dormitory. Besides, the sound was not murky at all though the impression relating to the headphones in HeadRoom says it is a bit murky without a headphones amp. Of course, there are some drawbacks relating to the headphones, first, I don't like the color of the earpads which is shinny silver. That is not good. Second, the size I think generally, the most of well-impressed headphones such as Sennheiser, BeyerDynamic tend to have big size of them. I think they can be downsized in some degree. Overall, the headphones is very good. You should buy one if you want to have a pair of closed headphones.
