I bought these headphones around 1995 I think. I got them so I'd have decen head phones to listen to CDs at work. I also bought a sony component CD player and put it in my office. I put on Nine Inch Nails "I was up above it" (I think that's the title) and was shocked when the thundering sub bass "boom" came through loud and clear. I could -feel- it. In general, any CD I put on sounded incredible with these heaphones.
I wore those headphones out, the ear pads are deteriorated from using them so much (but I still use them.) I went out and bought 2 more pairs last hear.
So I'll cut to the chase. For $60 there are no better heaphones in my opinion. They are small (compared to the higher priced models), they seal your ear well to hold in the bass compression (and cut out outside noise) and I find them to be quite comfortable. They sound very very good, but I find that it really depends on what your source is. Some cheaper portable CD players don't sound good at all, while home/component systems sound just short of incredible.
Now Sony makes a couple of models that look IDENTICAL to these. I can't tell you how these compare to those, but I can tell you that these are great headphones.
