| Stone77777's Full Review: Denon AHD-550 Professional Headphones |
When it comes to audio equipment, I like to believe there is a sub-race of human beings which exists somewhere between the clueless and the snobs.
I am proud to say I am a card carrying member of that sub-race. Such membership is distinguished by a complete willingness to buy mostly mainstream components such as Kenwood, Pioneer, JVC and Boston Acoustics. We know enough not to dive into the swamp of total money wasting junk but we also dont get our jollies by spending twice as much as we have to for our hundred watts of power. Even though we are despised by those whose lives revolve around pre-amps, power amps, selectively synthesized tuners, six level crossover networks and the like, we take great comfort in knowing that, without our purchasing power, the audio component industry would be a mere shell of what it is today.
This is my confession. I dont own anything by Nakamichi, Denon, Harmon Kardon, Bose or Bang and Olfusen. Until now...
I needed a new pair of headphones because my previous pair of $40 Kenwoods (no surprises there) somehow managed to fall to the carpet at a haphazard angle; thereby snapping the plastic support piece and rendering the right ear cup/speaker totally useless. In today's disposable society, what better excuse to go out and buy a new pair of headphones; preferably ones that were slightly better than the ones I had just ruined.
So it was I test drove a number of headphones at my local purveyor of all things electronic. Much to my surprise, the Denon AHD 550's were reasonably priced and even sounded pretty darn good although the only thing I could test them on was a cheap cd player with no real power behind the volume control. I forked over sixty five bucks, headed home...and fell in love.
These things are great. They fit comfortably, plug in nicely and give great spatial distinction. They handle power like a maniac and do NOT distort in any way, shape or form. I have managed, over the course of my life, to ruin about a third of my hearing..therefore I tend to violate the first rule of using headphones which is: "DONT LISTEN TO THEM ABOVE NORMAL VOLUME". Huh? The Denon AHD 550 headphones take everything I throw at them and keep coming back for more.
You cannot beat these headphones for the combination of great sound and relative value they provide. I sincerely doubt I will begin to populate the rest of my entertainment center with Denon products but I am darn proud to have made this step forward into the realm of audiophile greatness. If you join me, I promise you will not be disappointed.
