patatefrite's Full Review: Grado SR-125 Professional Headphones
The opinions i read on the net where very helpful for me in choosing a pair of headphones, so this is payback time.
I have had a top notch sound system for a number of years, so i know what i want. I needed headphones for my computer, so i can listen to music at night when the kids are at bed.
For the record i have an AMD XP1800+, Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer and 400 Watts Logitech Z-560 speakers (Awesome !).
I mainly listen to mp3's gathered from the net through Winamp with the Enhancer plug-in (better than DFX).
I was also curious to hear if or not there was a big difference between mp3's and good old CD wav's. The answer is when the mp3's are correctly encoded at large bitrate, the sound is really enjoyable. The loss in dynamic range can be partialy recovered with the use of a good equalizer plug-in. For purists that frown on such comments, i say the proof is in my grin (and my ears). And i like what i hear. Period.
As for the cans themselves, after much research on the net, i settleled to hear at the town store Grado Labs SR-80 and SR-125, and BeyerDynamics Dt-331 and DT-770 Pro. Right off the bat, the Beyers were too muffled to my taste, and without a real edge in the comfort department. My real fright coming to the store after what i had read was the Grado's comfort or lack thereof. After use, let me tell you this is not a problem. The Grados are light and are no problem at all after prolonged use. Anyway, their sound will blow you away. it is really that good. I choose the SR-125 over The SR-80 because the bass was more abundant. The midrange is perfect, the highs are great, and the overall feeling is one of clarity and excellent balance. With the different equalizers available within Winamp, i can tailor the sound to my liking, and the headphones just deliver...
I must point out my store did not carry Sennheisers, so i did not try them. I do not mind, as for comparable performance, they are much more expensive. And from other opinions, i do not think i could have found the crystal clear sound dear to me (blatant hearsay!).
I am really really happy with these, and have the impression that i have made the best by for my taste, for my use, and for the price.
