| joliet_jane's Full Review: Koss TD 65 Headphones |
I bought my first Koss TD65's in the summer of 1996. Some years later, about 2000, they stopped working correctly, so I mailed them to Koss with my receipt because it had come with a lifetime warranty. They did send me new ones very soon. And so, I have gotten six great years of enjoyment from one $25 pair of headphones. They died in a dancing accident in the summer of 2002.
First, I'll get the tragic flaw of these headphones out of the way. Even before I sent my first pair to Koss, one of the ears fell off, and would not stay on unless I was wearing them, then it was fine, so I did not send them back until they wouldn't make sound. The new ones broke in the same way within the week when I threw them at my floor in a rage over something. This means that these headphones are either very durable or not durable at all, depending on how you see it. I feel the former is true.
How do I know? I have know what they're made of. After their death, I examined the speaker that wouldn't work.
I had to strain with the tip of "the good scissors" to remove just the leatherette outer cover. It's on there very sercure. The foam under it is firm but soft, and actually comes in two pieces, one inside the other. After removing them, I had to pry off a thick layer of protective plastic, which was glued on so tightly it was still industrial sticky after I removed it.
I then had to go back to my drawer, because I still had to remove FOUR METAL SCREWS. No more glue, no plastic fitting clips or whatever, SCREWS. I took those out, and took the hard plastic piece off, and the speaker itself was on the back of it. I pried it out of its place and noticed that it was pretty heavy for its size (a circle, about and inch and a half wide. I could see where the cord from
You don't know freedom until you use a headphone with eight feet of cord (unless you've used wireless). The mobility this gives you over shorter cords is something you'll get accustomed to and anything less than eight may make you feel restrained.
Oh, and what next, am I missing something? Ah, of course-- sound! These things are powerful. They sound "woody." They don't sound "tinny" or "plastic-y." It's got great bass, and the sound is clear and distinct, not muddy, not watery (like the Koss UR20).
The sound of these phones is why I can't buy new headphones without playing over $50. I can't stand anything less than the BEST.
