I bought this pair for $40 on the internet. And the only reason I bought this pair is because of its price. It used to sell for $79 or more. So far it have been a disappointment. It is a mid-small sized headphone. The heart shaped driver makes it stylish. And the soft foam pads on the driver makes you feel comfortable wearing it. But the good points end right here. I have several complains about this headphone: (1)The sensitivity of this headphone is very bad (contrast to what it claims to be: 106db), I often have to max out my volume knob just to get a decent volume level. This problem never happened to Koss porta pro, sporta pro, Jensen jf20 and Grado SR-60s. (2) This headphone sounds too dark and the bass is overemphasized. And the bases is somewhat loose and undefined. Grado SR-60's bright, warm sound in comparison is just so much more pleasant for my ears. I think the pads covering the driver has caused this dark, exhausting and closured kind of sound. Actually if you wear the driver backward, the sound is much brighter and clear which makes me wondering what Sennheiser's engineers had been doing designing this headphone.(3)The highs are brittle. Probably also caused by the foam pads covering the driver.
The feeling of sound coming out from this headphone is like the sound is "choking" itself and trying very hard to come out but just couldn't. The bad quality of this sound leaves something for us to worry about. For similar or even less cost, I think a pair of Koss sporta pro, prota pro is a much better deal. Sennheiser has made some of the best sounding headphones in the world, but HD490 is definitely a weak product and I think it is not worth the $40 I spent on it.
