| ericgreene's Full Review: Sennheiser HD-490 Consumer Headphones |
The Sennheiser brand is world renowned for quality headphones at reasonable prices. For decades Sennheiser has been known for their revolutionary open-aire design which is used in these headphones. Having used Sennheiser headphones in the past, I knew that I was getting what I paid for when I saw these gems on sale at Ebay.
What makes these headphones better then the ones that came with my portable CD payer?
Many people do not realize what a difference a quality pair of "cans" can make when it comes to enjoying music. Think of it this way. Would you buy a new Corvette and use the wheels from a Caviler? Most people would not... but since manufactures of audio equipment still see headphones as accessories, little care or thought goes into most of them.
Would they work with my stereo or personal CD player?
Sure, the HD490 are easily powered with out the use of an "amp". Just plug and enjoy.
How do they look/feel?
These headphones are not as large as they appear in the picture. The ear-cups are about 3" by 4" inches large and these cans are amazingly light. One could wear these babies for hours with no fatigue.
How do they sound?
The HD490, as I mentioned before, will beat any headphone included with a Walkman hands down. When compared with it's big brothers, the HD570 and the HD600 (I own the 570 and have listened to the 600), a true audio-phile can tell the difference, but the average listener would be just as happy with the 470, for much less $.
The highs and mids on the 470 are great in my opinion and the bass is phenomenal. These are the kind of headphones that you listen to with the bass boost off:)
So if you're stuck with those headphones you got with your personal player, give the HD470s a try. They go for 79.99, but if you look hard enough you can find them new for $35-$50.
