| Tyll's Full Review: Sennheiser HE-90 Headphones |
Attention all mere mortals out there, drool now, because that's all you'll be able to do, the Sennheiser Orphius is $14,900!!! Is it worth it? (Again, drool now.) Yes they are! They are better than the best sound you've ever heard.
Now, for those of you with with plutonium credit cards, I'll say this: I don't care if you own a pair of Wilson Grand Slams and a Krell (est value $120,000), these baby's are better. It's cheating, 'cause headphones don't have to drive a room full of air, but the kind of resolution you get with the ultimate of high end headphones is simple unheard but in a system like the Orphius. The loss of normal spacial awareness when submitted to the liquid ways of the Orphius is beyond elevating; it's a trans-dimensional experience of the first order.
This being a product family review, I must mention Sennheiser has a lower cost electrostatic headphone called the HEV60/HE70 that goes for about $1300. Frankly I think the Sennheiser 600 driven by a HeadRoom Max is markedly better at about the same price.
Electrostatic headphones are generally quicker and more spacial sounding than dynamic headphones. Up until four or five years ago, it could be safely said that electrostatic headphones were better than dynamic headphones; well Stax was the only electrostatic and cost ten time what dynamic headphones cost so they had better sound better. But in the recent past many improvements have been made with dynamic headphones and headphone amplifiers have made their apearence. It is simply no longer true that one headphone technology is inherently better than another.
Generally, electro static headphones are quicker and more "airy" sounding, but they don't have enough hose power in the bass and tend to be weak and undefined in the lows. Dynamic headphones are more easily punchy sounding, but can get a bit honky sounding. Both can suffer from harshness if not done well.
