| siliconjunkie's Full Review: Sony MDR-G72LP Consumer Headphones |
I am very happy with my SONY MDR-G72LP's. I was a little skeptical of the "backphone" style headband in regards to how comfortable it would be, and I am very picky about sound quality, so these little guys had a lot to prove.
I usually listen to music using studio monitor headphones, whether I am sitting at my computer, or kicking back in the living room at home. I am very happy with my big, burly SONY cans...but I decided that I needed something lighter and easier to stow in my backpack, due to the fact that an office move had just added 1 hour to my commute, and was going to be forced to take a train and a bus to work instead of the 5 minute drive I used to have.
Enter the SONY MDR-G72LP's. I went to a local audio store and found these things. I liked the fact that they folded down to a little palm-sized package, and I must admit that I think the high tech circular silver dome look is pretty cool (albeit a bit raver-y). I pretty much bought them for the size factor alone (earbuds, although they are smaller, usually sound like garbage unless you get some nice Etymotics...and smaller studio cans were still a bit too big for my purposes).
To my surprise, these little folding 'phones have a pretty good sound. They definitely have much better bass response and overall "audio image" quality than the similar form factor headphones that come with portable music players nowadays. So, although they could never replace a good set of studio phones for long term listening, they are a great set to have for travel and for commute-time.
