I have found the Sony MDR-NC20 uses built in microphones to pick up outside noises, such as honking horns, squealing brakes, no scratchy PA announcements, and no screaming toddlers, then Sony uses a out of phase signal to quiet them. Its ideal for use on an airplane, on a train, or while riding in traffic, the MDR-NC20 lets me hear more clearly the music from my CD or MD portable, without the high volume and stain on my ears. The supplied adapter works with many airline sound systems, too!!!! But does not come with a full size plug. It folds for compact storage and uses a "AAA" battery.
