cyberdecker's Full Review: Sony MDR-V700DJ Professional Headphones
Finding a GOOD set of DJ headphones for a good price is tough. You can go cheap and get bad sound. And the high end ones can be ridiculously expensive. I think Sony has the happy medium here with the MDR-V700 DJ cans.
The best feature is definitely the sound quality. These phones are designed for DJ use, so the bass range goes to a whoppingly low 5 Hz. Most other DJ headphones have a low end cutoff at around 10 Hz. The bass is very clean and crisp.
Mid and high ranges tend to be a little bit washed out, being one of the more minor drawbacks of these phones, but in all honesty, at least while I am DJing house music, the low end bass range is what I need to listen for and it sounds great.
The output is quite good, reaching very high volume without significant distortion. You WILL be able to hear everything even in those loud club environments.
Stylistically, these headphones are gorgeous. A durable cloth and plastic headband keeps them resting on your head or neck comfortably. The metal casing around the earpieces looks slick, but does add a bit of weight to them.
The earpieces are covered in a soft leather (or leather like) material. The earpieces DO tend to crack over time most likely due to sweat and oils from skin. I have had mine two years and the earpieces are in pretty good condition.
The round earpieces are nice for being able to wear the headphones with the band up over your head or back behind your neck. Some phones have oval shaped earpieces that fit around your ear making it difficult to wear them back behind the neck. I find that wearing them over the head for extended periods of time (> 2 hours) can get a little uncomfortable, so I usually wear them around my neck and listen to them by pushing the earpiece up with my shoulder as most DJs seem to do.
The cord and jack are standard. There is a coiled cord for stretching. The joint at the jack and at the earpiece are pretty strong. Mine have never come loose. The jack itself is gold plated, and 1/4" tip can be unscrewed to reveal a 1/8" tip for use in other devices.
The headphones fold up nicely into a nice shiny pouch for carrying around that comes with the packaging.
Now comes the word of WARNING...
The swivel mechanism on this headphone is shoddy. It may look like a piece of strong metal, but in fact, it is just a piece of relatively flimsy plastic. The joint where the headband meets the earpiece has a swivel that allows the phones to bend in and out and twist on an axis to contour to different wearing styles. Over time, however, this piece of plastic receives a lot of stress and slowly begins to crack eventually leading to a broken swivel that is NOT comfortable to wear.
Replacing ONE swivel will cost approximately $30 from Sony. I have come up with an alternate (but not so pretty) solution. You can take a very thin one way zip tie (the kind used for strapping wiring) and wrap it around the cylindrical swivel to strengthen the integrity of the swivel itself. Dab a little bit of crazy glue to keep it in place and you're good to go. This breaking tends to happen after about the first year of relatively heavy use, but with this fix, your headphones can last MUCH longer. Mine have been going strong for over 2 years and this is the only issue I've had.
Overall, these are a GREAT set of cans. Sound great, look great, and with exception of the swivel problem (that can be fixed for cheap or replaced for a price), they are superb and built very strong.
