LetItRut's Full Review: Sony MDR-V700DJ Professional Headphones
I originally wrote a thumbs-down review of the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones on Epinions last June, but after demoing and finally buying a pair of them and using them on my portable and home audio equipment, my opinion of them has changed significantly. The following review reflects my REAL opinion of these headphones.
The Sony MDR-V700DJ is a full-sized DJ-style headphone. It is a supraural (on-the-ear) type headphone with earpieces that swivel so that the MDR-V700DJ can lie flat on a table. The coiled cord extends to about 10 feet, attaches to only the left earpiece, and is terminated with a mini-plug with a screw-on 1/4" adapter. The headphones look cool, with a silver-colored finish.
The MDR-V700DJ sure looks cool, but how does it sound? After buying a pair at my local Best Buy superstore, I will have to say that I like the MDR-V700DJ much more than the other current Sony closed/sealed "studio monitor" series headphones. The bass is a little on the heavy side; the mids are a little recessed; the highs are a little on the bright side. Its 24-ohm impedance and 107dB/mW sensitivity makes the MDR-V700DJ suitable for use on even weakling 5mW/channel portable audio equipment.
The MDR-V700DJ is too heavy to wear comfortably for any substantial length of time. The earpieces and headband tend to squeeze the user's ears; I can wear these for an hour, if not longer.
Despite the mostly plastic construction of the MDR-V700DJ headphones, these headphones are quite durable. The plastic surrounding the swivel joints can crack a bit - but not enough to affect the functionality of these headphones.
Overall, I highly recommend the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones, as long as you are not listening to too much classical music. They work very well as DJ headphones for spinning in a club environment - just ask DJ Tiesto, Paul van Dyk and Mauro Picotto on how they use these headphones - and they also work quite well when listening to rock (especially hard rock) and dance/techno music, and may be well suited for some jazz music.
