| tennis_player's Full Review: Aiwa XC-35M 5-Disc CD Changer |
The Aiwa XC-35M is a 5-CD changer unit. It is fairly large and substantial looking and in feel. It's taller than most but this allows the unit to use a larger CD tray, making it easier to load and retrieve individual CDs.
It's easy to use and the controls are well marked and logically placed. The buttons are fairly large, making for easy location and use during operation.
It is loaded with features.
-5-CD Automatic Changer or single-play modes.
-Full function IR remote.
-Easy view of CD and track being played and remaining tracks.
-Play/Pause/Scan Forward & Back/Track Skip
-Normal/Shuffle/Repeat & Program play modes.
-Repeat function can be invoked for 1 track or 1 CD or all 5 CDs.
-Sleep mode to auto-stop the unit after a specific disc is finished.
-Allows changing of 4 discs without interruption of 5th playing disc.
-Memory allows programming of specific tracks to be played
-Allows changing/skipping of discs at any time.
-Display indicates total tracks available for each disc, total time, time per track and time remaining for each disc during play.
-A "smart edit function" makes recording via an external audio cassette deck very easy. After identifying specific tracks of each CD for recording via the program mode, the unit will automatically split the selections for each side of cassettes from lengths of 10 to 99 minutes. The user need not worry about or compute the individual track times to match the cassette tape recording time length.
-Optical and Digital outputs.
-Standard audio output jacks.
-Front Panel Headphone jack output (no level control).
The unit works well and does everything a CD changer should do. The audio output quality into a pre amp or receiver is fine and cassette recordings are really easy to make with an external tape deck.
I use this in my home office and feed the output from the headphone jack into my 3-piece Cambridge Soundworks self-powered sub/satellite speaker system. It's integrated into my PC power strip and remains on at all times I'm in the office. I control it via the remote control. I've lived with it for 6 months, now and I like it very much. It suits my purpose beautifully.
The only complaints are very minor and do not really affect the performance of the unit. The unit is rather loud, mechanically - somewhat clunky sounding. It would be nice if it were smoother and quieter during disc changer and drawer closing/opening operations. And, it seems to have a slight lag or delay during each disc selection or loading. It seems to take a long time to read the disc before going into operation. Again, these are very minor items and do not bother me.
The Aiwa is not marketed as Audiophile quality so these little quirks do not detract from the overall performance. And, it is very low cost, making it an excellent value for the price.
