| sakic's Full Review: Panasonic SL-S202 Personal CD Player |
One of the earlier generation portable CD players. The unit is decent in size even in today's market, and has adequate XBS sound. This is a basic unit in the current line of CD players and is recommended for those who want a player that is inexpensive or one that is someone's first owned unit. The pro's of the SL-S202 are ...
1. Size. Relatively small in size;
2. Ease of use. Buttons located on the lip of the unit are elementary;
3. Sound. XBS sound is very similar to S-XBS sound in the 40 second shock protection units;
4. Price. Low ... lower ... price than other units.
5. CD push 'catch-release mechanism'. All Panasonic units have a mechanism built in the base that catches and releases the CDs with the push of a button. On the Sony, AIWA, JVC units you have to physically pull or tug on the CD for release from the unit.
Some of the disadvantages of the SL-202 are ...
1. Fragility. Low cost but fragile.
2. Shock Protection. Only 3 seconds of shock protection. The current standard appears to be 40 seconds. Depending on the use of the unit, it may be adequate. For stationary positions, or in flat/stable positions such as in a gym bag, one may not require the EPS (Electronic Shock Protection) to be turned on. After all it DOES drain batteries quite quickly. Yet, it is always 'nice' to have the option of having added shock protection.
3. Accessories. No accessories added, other than the headphones (standard accessory).
Overall, a low cost, basic unit, for those looking for something elementary and functional. For the slight extra cost of about $20-25, it may be recommended to move up to the SL-360 in a Panasonic unit.
