| camj74's Full Review: Yamaha CDX-390 CD Player |
While the DVD revolution rolls on, me, being an audiophile at heart was after a single tray CD player. If you are after good sound quality from your CD's, you still must purchase a top-end DVD player ($300 plus), or stay with a CD player. After some searching high and low for a single tray CD player (after my old one simply wore out), I came across this unit. Unfortunately I didn't have much of a choice, but I must say I'm very impressed with this player.
It is a very simple unit to use, with most of the features located on the remote control. The loading mechanism is a little loud and 'clunky', but it's response time is lightning. Selecting tracks, whether it's track 1 or track 14 is a breeze, and will engage tracks in an instant. It's track search function is very responsive and the 'random' function is also very quick.
The responsiveness is something that is crucial to me. There is nothing more irritating with CD players, then putting in a disc and waiting up to 10 seconds until the track finally starts.
The only downside of this unit (and it is a minor one), is the frequency response at either end. The bass appears a little reserved, and the upper treble is also restricted - but this is typical of the Yamaha "sound signature" ie. their 'natural sound' philosophy. However this is such a minor detail, that most listeners will not notice it.
The CDX-390 is a rugged, simple, reliable and responsive unit for those who want a single CD, with a great sound from a trusted manufacturer.
