Cons: No remote, no Dolby S
The Bottom Line: Best deck under $300. Sound quality is very close (even identical) to a CD, very easy to use to and has very some unique capabilities.

| RBE's Full Review: Technics RS-TR575 Single Dual Cassette Deck |
I bought the Technics TR575 because of it was modestly priced and it had some features that were important to me – the ability to calibrate the cassette’s response and to rewind a tape in about a minute. I have tons on cassettes at home, but it is a dieing media and I did not want to spend tons of money on it. I got mine for about $200.
The deck has real time indication and this is much more intuitive than the plain digital counter.
Although I do not tape much (I rather burn CDs), I did tape a few tapes and this unit’s ability to calibrate itself to the tape is pretty impressive. I never got such good sound from my tapes, no matter which one I used. It is very difficult to actually differentiate between a CD and its recording.
The Dolby HX Pro is very useful, and so are the Dolby B and C.
The unit has the capability to record in both wells, but I never do that anyway.
Other than that, the unit has all logic controls and using them is very easy and intuitive.
The unit lacks Dolby S, in addition to the lack of remote control (which is very annoying).
Although the frequency response of the tape as recorded in the manual is little lower (16Khz-17Khz) than some of the competition (claiming sometimes about 19Khz), I think that it is actually on par or even higher. I compared recording and found that the sound (highs) is better on this unit compared to the Sony and Pioneer at this price range.
In terms of build quality – nothing to write home about. It is a typical Japanese piece of equipment, not as pleasing as the fancy units from Denon, Pioneer or Sony. Its color is a bit charcoal like, and it is generally different from my other components, which are glossy black. The letters on the unit are yellowish and not as nice as gold on black.
Overall, after comparing some other decks (Sony, Pioneer) in this price range, I think that it is the best sounding deck under $300. It’s sound quality is very close (or even identical using good tapes) to a CD, it is a very easy to use to and it has very some unique capabilities.
