Pros: Records great, bias adjustment, Dolby S
Cons: No internal light
The Bottom Line: I would recommend it if you think it's worth spending a few hundred dollars for a tape deck.

| europe1965's Full Review: Sony TC-KA1ESA Single Cassette Deck |
I guess single deck tape recorders are a dying breed, with the cd-r and cd-rw devices coming on pretty cheap, and a ton of dual deck cassette players.
However, I still find use for tapes, they're universal, cheap, and compatible with everything.
I've owned the TC-KA1ESA since October 1999, and I'm very happy with it, I especially like the Dolby S noise reduction, the hiss is undetectable, but there are none of the sound distorsion issues that I had found with Dolby C.
Also, I like the calibration feature, that allows the bias to be fine tuned to the tape being recorded on by recording and playing back a test signal.
There's one feature I really miss: an internal light that would help understand how close the tape is to its end.
Reliability seems really good, only once I've had a freak accident when using the AMS (Automatic Music Search) feature, and the motor would not stop running.
I ended up having to unplug the tape deck; very annoying and scary, but hasn't happened since.
