First off let me say that this is a good tape deck no matter what. With three heads and a load of features ensuring high quality, this is a deck that one should definitely consider if looking to record. Unfortunately one thing stands in its way from actually being a great tape deck... its not a nakamichi. Despite what others say, there is a difference when it comes to tape decks and that is whethers its a nak or not. the best way to see this is by looking at the frequency response of these decks. this sony has a frequency response of 20-19,000 khz with metal tape, with lower quality tape the response is less. In comparison, Nakamichi tape decks have a response of 20-21,000 khz, providing a distinct edge in sound quality. Keep in mind that this is for all types of tapes, not just metal. Hearing recordings on two head Naks is probably more comparable to the sound you will hear on this sony. Despite this, Sony is making better tape decks than before, although in my honest opinion, tape decks made 10 to 20 years ago perform better than the newer decks. this is a good deck for recording, although its not the best by any means, and should definitely be considered if in your price range.
