The DHC-MD373 is an excellent mini hi-fi offering from Sony.
I was led to purchase this model by very favourable What HiFi? reviews in which the Sony beat off the competition from the rivalling JVC and Aiwa systems. I found the JVC simply to be very poorly designed and here is where Sony have surpassed their rivals. Both Sharp and Hitachi have copied this design recently but neither can match the quality of the original Sony's facilities.
The fine roster of features includes an excellent Minidisc component which is capable of producing quality reproductions hardly discernable from the original CDs. Titling the discs is tedious, although this is true with most systems on the market is this price range. The CD player itself is fast to respond to track requests and pausing and is a quality component which can rescue even badly scratched discs. The RDS FM Radio picks up even weak signals and is easy to use and the same is true for the AM frequencies. Several 'sound mode presets' are factory set allowing 'rock', 'stadium' and 'dance' acoustics to be recreated by the unit, and although I rarely use these, it is good to be able to set the DBFB additional bass setting individually for tracks requiring extra bass emphasis.
The speakers create an brilliant airy soundstage in which all tones sound great, and the wooden 'look' of the speakers means they are aesthetically superior to less well-designed plastic ones. The squat nature of the hi-fi unit itself may not be to everyone's tastes but I love it tremendously and it sits well in even the smallest shelf-space. As with almost all hi-fi systems more speaker cable would be preferable, but additional cable is cheap and easily obtainable and so this isn't a significant criticism.
Altogether a neat, good-looking, excellent-sounding hi-fi system with magnificent (and well-built) features which makes the Sony DHC-MD 373 irresistible.
