| cpurser's Full Review: Sony Handycam CCD-TRV66 Hi-8 Analog Camcorder |
The CCD-TRV66 is Sony's top of the line Hi8, and Oh, what a camcorder! I bought my unit about a week before Christmas '99, and my family and I have enjoyed it a great deal since then. It is very easy to use for the novice, but has a ton of features for the advanced user, too many to list here. I didn't even read the manual before I started using it. And I have found uses for it that I would have never thought of before, i.e. taking it house-hunting so you can go back and review the houses you like.
Some of my favorite features are as follows:
1) It camera is very small, and it fits nicely in the hand.
2) The powerful optical zoom (20x) is awesome. It is the strongest that I have seen on any camcorder.
3) The picture quality is awesome outdoors, but a little less indoors.
4) The Night Vision feature works great, even though it is kind of gimmicky (unless you do surveillance work).
5) The "Info-Lithium" battery system. It tells you how much time (in minutes) you have left on the battery.
6) The remote is handy for when you are getting a group shot, or when you are using the camera as a playback unit.
7) If a TV is not handy to watch your footage, then you can use the LCD screen and built-in speaker.
8) The built-in stereo mic works great.
Some of my dislikes:
1) The battery included only lasts for about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. You can buy another one that lasts a lot longer, but it will cost you big $$$.
2) For being their top-of-the-line unit, the LCD display is kind of small.
3) The speed of the zoom is hard to control. If you are not careful, it will zoom in at a very high rate of speed. On playback, this does not look very professional. I guess it will take some getting used to.
Overall, I am very happy with this camcorder. I would recommend it to anyone.
