I am extremely happy with my new Sony CCD-TRV66 which I purchased for about $775 at Circuit City. I have since seen it for $899 at other stores, even during the Labor Day sales.
I bought the Sony CCD-TRV66 to preserve those fleeting moments as my kids grow. Even though I have never owned a camcorder before and used them very little, I have been complimented on the quality of my recordings.
I love how easy the LCD screen makes it to shoot movies, and the image stabilization is a great feature to have, too. I took very stable shots from the Golden Gate Bridge of boats on the San Francisco Bay and of Alcatraz.
I am not impressed with the battery that ships with the Sony CCD-TRV66, which lasts under two hours. However, you can buy better batteries for more money.
The Sony CCD-TRV66 has a 20x optical and 360x digital zoom. The digital zoom is an interesting feature, but it pixilates the image so much that I never use it.
I experimented with taking still shots, but I have yet to transfer any to my computer to see the results. The "Firewire" hardware costs extra.
If you are an amateur photographer and tech-saavy, then you want a camcorder that you can grow into. Buy the Sony CCD-TRV66.
