Pros: Easy-to-use, unbelievably easy to use with iMovie on the Mac, Firewire
Cons: Can't limit sensitivity of zoom switch; Hard to use special effects and modes.
The Bottom Line: First camcorder I ever used -- quick to master. Works perfectly with iMovie on Mac, so editing is a breeze. I've taken it many places with no problems.

| davidsilva's Full Review: Sony Handycam® DCR-TRV103 Digital-8 Camcorder |
The Sony DCR-TRV103 is my first and only video camcorder, so I can't compare it to any other product. However, I love it! I should mention that I didn't buy the camera; it belongs to my boyfriend... who isn't getting it back ;)
I've taken it traveling to Portugal, the Azores, the heights of the Sierra Nevada, the depths of caves, Death Valley and elsewhere. It has performed perfectly in all of those environments.
It isn't the camera's fault, but I had a devil of a time charging the batteries in Europe. Having a voltage converter isn't always enough: some wall sockets are quite recessed, not allowing a converter to be plugged in. (Speaking of that, do some camera's have a smaller AC adapters?) Of course, I wish the batteries lasted longer and that additional batteries weren't so costly.
The quality of the image and sound are excellent -- though I haven't compared them to other cameras'.
One of my greatest likes: I can use the camera so easily with iMovie to edit video on my Mac. the credit belongs more to the Mac, I suppose.
I have a couple of major dislikes:
(1) I wish there were a way to control the zoom switch so that, e.g., you could always zoom in at the same rate or not zoom beyond a certain threshold. Trying to do it with your finger is impossible, as the switch is too sensitive.
(2) Try as I might, I cannot figure out how to get out of the special effects, autoexposure-override modes, etc. Eventually they do go back to normal -- but not when I want them to.
Recommended:
Yes
Amount Paid (US$): 800
