My husband and I had been bumming our brothers Panasonic camcorder from him for all of our trips and special occasions. Well, we gave into the sales and got ourselves the Panasonic PV-L550. This is a great camera, easy to use and still offers a lot of features.
We wanted something to capture all of the changes our daughter was going through, babbling, crawling all of the moments you can bribe her with when she is a teenager :)
We looked at Sony and Sharp but found that neither of the beginner/reasonable priced models allowed you to play their tapes in your vcr. This is a big feature since we want to make movies to send our out of state relatives. This camera also came with a lot of extras like a shoulder strap, charger, extra cables, tape adapter for the VCR. The best part is the easy to read manual, you can get started and filming in less than 1/2 an hour.
The flip out screen really makes for easy filming. I have found that my hand is steadier when I can look at the screen. It also allows you to set up your shot and make sure that is what you want before you start filming.
The zoom on the camera 18x optical and 150x digital is all you really need! I can close in on my daughters face for a shot of her sweet smile or when we try to feed her a new food!
The camera comes with some pretty neat fade effects and colors and titles. But, one of the neatest things is the smart title. When the cameras calender hits a major holiday(Christmas, 4th of July) the titler automatically comes up with Merry Christmas or Independence Day. It also has other titles you can turn on! This makes for a really cute and put together movie.
The only negative I have found with our camcorder is the same with the others is the battery life. The battery that is included only lasts about 1 hour, so you will have to buy an extra battery for a long trip.
Overall this is a great camera for someone who wants to tape their vacations and kids. It is easy to use and comes with everything you will need.
