| fishendan's Full Review: Contax T IX APS Film Camera |
I bought this camera about four months ago on eBay. After reading many reviews, I was expecting very high quality construction and picture quality. After taking about five rolls of film, I was very happy with the results. The Zeiss lens is outstanding. Exposure was right on and the autofocus works great. The pictures cannot easily be distinguished from those taken with my Olympus OM-2S with a 50mm 1.4 lens.
However, recently I have had serious problems with the camera. After finishing a roll of film, the camera started to rewind, as it should. Unfortunately, the rewind failed and the camera started making sickening "grinding" noises. I changed the batteries and cycled the on/off button several times, but the film will not rewind. This is especially distressing because I took some very important pictures on that roll that undoubtably will be lost now.
Contax customer service has been extremely unhelpful, and it took me three tries to even get somebody on the phone.
I would not recommend buying this camera because of this bad experience. It's possible that I got the one "dud" in a thousand, but who knows?
My serious recommendation would be to get a Minolta Freedom Zoom 160 instead. This 35mm camera has some extremely innovative features (extremely slick autofocus system which actually identifies and focuses on people in the viewfinder, even if not centered!), costs about 1/3 of the contax price, and is very good quality.
