| bluestarmom's Full Review: Canon Elph2 APS Film Camera |
I work for AMTRAK as a Reservation Sales Agent. With our incentive program, the Stampede, you earned stamps monthly based on specific performance criteria. You shop from a catalog, and buy items by redeeming your "incentive stamps", similar to the old S&H Green Stamp program. I spent all 5 years worth of my stamps at one time, before our program was phased out.
As one of the thirteen items I selected, I chose the Canon Elph 2. My middle daughter Kristen was going to Jiangmen, China and Hong Kong with her H.S. marching band, in April 2002. Our city Riverside CA has a friendship sister city exchange with Jiangmen. I wanted her to have a quality camera to take with her. I wanted one that was not complicated to use. I loaded her up with 10 rolls of 400 speed film.
Why I picked the Elph2:
This camera packs mutliple features into a small APS point and shoot. It is pocket sized, small enough to fit into a small purse. For an amateur like my daughter, you cannot go wrong. I have used this camera many times myself.
Features:
It is basically a one touch camera. To operate, you touch the on/off button. To zoom from wideangle to telephoto, you operate a manual button on the top of the camera. The lens is 23-46mm zoom range. The Elph 2 utilizes the APS format, with the drop in film cassette, unlike traditional 35mm film. You cannot load the film the wrong way. You can choose from either a 25 exposure or 40 exposure roll. 20-1000 speed film is also offered in APS. Each film cassette has an identification number. The 3 photo modes available to choose from are classic, high and panoramic. The button to change photo modes is located on the camera back next to the viewfinder. You will find the self timer button is on the top of the camera along with the on/off button. Using a small tripod will allow you to get into the photo without having to ask someone else take the picture for you. On the back of the camera, in the middle, is a clear window. There are symbols for red-eye, flash, no flash, nightmode flash printed above this window. Plus there is a battery box and film square box for LCD display when the camera is turned on. The pop out lens has 23-46mm zoom capability. Along the bottom of the camera are the flash on/off, picture selector (# of prints), memo and date. The memo feature lets you select a photo caption for your picture. I have not tried it myself. A little black button is attached to the strap to be used with these buttons to set their individual features. On the bottom is the box for drop in film loading. The button to open the film compartment is on the side. The Elph also came with its own leather case and strap.
Photo quality and picture modes:
My daughter made good use of the 3 film settings. At the Great Wall of China, she used the panoramic setting to capture this amazing architectural wonder in several photos. She used the high setting to take photos of several temples. She used her panoramic setting also to take a group photo with the schoolmates she visited while at Jiangmen #1 Middle School, in Jiangmen. The photos she took captured the look and feel of Jiangmen. The colors are pretty clear, crisp quality shines through.
The downsides are minimal. The only downsides I found are putting your finger on the lens itself if you are not careful. The zoom itself could be more powerful. Maybe that is not possible in so small a sized camera.
