Pros: rugged, outstanding size and user friendly, great value
Cons: wish it had better red-eye reduction and greater flash range
The Bottom Line: This is a very small unit that you can carry anywhere/everywhere - no excuse for not getting a picture under all conditions.

| tennis_player's Full Review: Canon Elph2 APS Film Camera |
It is very obvious that Chester, in his Epinion, is highly familiar with 35mm photography. Just a minor error that does not detract from his Epinion in any way - he notes that the flash modes include a "rear-curtain, (night mode) function. This is technically incorrect as that is a 35mm and other SLR camera term for blocking out the light from the viewfinder from entering the camera and onto the film during prolonged night exposure shots. Rangefinder and auto-focus units do not have a direct light path to the film from the viewfinder since they are not directly coupled to the objective lens. Therefore, there is no curtain or other device needed to block out the viewfinder form the film, since no light path exists.
He also notes that the slightly larger Elph 370 has a slower lens in the long zoom function. However, it is almost as fast as the Elph 2 in the non zoom mode - 4.2 versus 4.5. This is less than 1/2 a lens stop difference in the non-zoom mode. Therefore, there really isn't a penalty in the light gathering ability for the Elph 370.
And, one other very important feature not previously noted, the Elph, Elph 2, Elph 370 and Elph 490 are all capable of a form of a limited time exposure of up to 2 seconds. To perform this function, you must have a tripod and a Canon RC-1 or RC-5 remote control unit ($19.95) to avoid any motion during that exposure period.
As Chester has noted, the industrial design of the Elph and Elph 2 really are outstanding.
One other minor note on the price - the Manufacturer's listing of price for the Elph 2 of $449 is in error. I believe the list is $349 and is typically available at $249.
Enjoy!
Jim
5/6/01 Update: I see in the local ads that the typical price for this unit is now $199 with case, film, battery and U.S. Warranty.
