Okay, I graduated to the world of "it's time to get a decent camera." I am not a professional photographer by far and I didn't have the slightest idea how to pick out a camera. But, I was preparing for a trip to England and France, so I knew I desperately needed a camera to capture the memories of the trip that start to fade without photos.
So, for my birthday, my parents bought me a camera. When choosing the camera, I asked the salesperson for a camera that "any idiot can use", of course meaning me. I didn't want to worry about any of my photos not turning out, since this was a once in a lifetime experience.
I was presented with this camera, which used the advanced photo system. What this means is that you basically open the camera, drop the film cartridge in it, and you're set. The camera does all the work. Bonus points here, because I hate loading the film. The setback, both the film and processing are more expensive, but going down in price from what I hear.
On my trip, I was able to take three different size photos, including panoramic. I could switch from one size to another on the same roll of film, which was great. I got all of Stonehenge in one photo, I got some incredibly tall cathedrals all in one photo, which would have been very difficult to do with a camera without the panoramic option.
Other things I like about the camera, the date prints on the back of the photo once processed, which is good for me because I am somewhat slow in labeling photos. Now if I could only get it to print who the photo is of...maybe one day.
Things I do not like about this camera include the lens that you look through to take the photo. Now I'm sure there is a professional name for this viewer thing, but it is terrible on this camera. You know how on most cameras, you raise them to your face and you naturally are able to find the thing you look through, well not on this camera. At first I thought I was the problem, being my lack of photography experience. But when I gave the camera to others to take photos of me in certain places on my trip, I noticed that EVERY person had to do a double take, meaning they put it up to their face, then lowered it, looked at the camera and then re-raised it. It's a pain.
Also, there tends to be a higher incidence of the dreaded RED EYE on these photos. Yes, there is a red eye reducer, but if you close the shutter, and then re-open it, it resets, and I forgot often to push the red eye selector.
Overall, it's a decent camera, but I'm sure there are better ones out there.
