Darkclaw's Full Review: Kodak Advantix C400AF APS Film Camera
Having a couple of Polaroid cameras, I felt I should invest in a regular 35mm camera for those times when I just wanted to take a regular picture. After purchasing a Polaroid 35mm camera, I was disgusted by the blurry photos it took. About a year or so later, I was introduced to the Kodak Advantix C400 AF and thanks to it, I couldn't be happier taking pictures in all three sizes.
The camera itself is small, sleek, and easy to use. Opening the "flap" on the front of the camera will reveal the lens and turn on the camera as well. The "flap" is also where the flash is located. Very wise idea to place the flash there. It reduced the red eye or the brightness of many previous cameras that placed the flash so close to the lens.
The C400 allows for three different picture sizes. The regular classic size found in all traditional cameras, as well as Group (great for adding in a few extra people in one photo) and Panoramic (much wider, great for taking scenery pictures). Switching between these sizes is simple, simply move the small bar to the size desired on the top of the camera. If you look in the viewfinder while doing this, you can see which size you are currently using by the size allowed inside the viewfinder.
In addition to the three easy-to-use sizes, the C400 also comes with many modes for taking pictures that can be accessed and/or chosen with the push of the small MODE button. Whether it be a picture taken during the night, one without flash, or if you want to include yourself with the camera's self-timer, there's a mode for the picture you want and need in whatever setting. Not bad at all for a camera that costs $70.
Thanks to the "enhanced" features of Advantix film, loading the film is a breeze. No more pulling the film to the end to load! Simply drop the film in the loader as already shown on the camera, close, and you're ready to go. The Advantix film itself is also very cheap. You can get a pack of three films, each with 25 exposures, for $11. Once the film is in, the nifty LCD screen will show you how many exposures you have left, as well as what mode the camera is currently in.
Taking the actual pictures is easy thanks to the built in Auto Focus (hence the "AF") feature in the camera. No more having to worry about zooming in or out for a good picture. As long as you're at least two feet away from the subject, the AF feature will literally guarantee you a perfect shot.
As for the quality of the pictures themselves, they could not be better! No matter what kind of picture you take in terms of size, the photos come out rich, vibrant, and best of all, clear and free of any blur or red eye thanks to the many enhanced features like the AF and the location of the flash. Depending on where you take your film for developing (I use Wal-Mart), the cost will vary. After taking a mixture of 14 group and panoramic photos with reprints, the price came out to a dirt-cheap $10 which is excellent considering the quality of the photos and the different sizes.
The Kodak Advantix C400 AF blew me away with all the bells and whistles it has and its ease of use. If you're looking for a camera to use at parties, or to take on a trip you can't go wrong with this camera. For its consumer pleasing price, the C400 packs quite a punch.
