| gstriph's Full Review: Nikon Nuvis S 2000 Film Camera |
The Nuvis S 2000 is a great travel camera for people who want to unobtrusively record events for a family album. I loved its small size -- it fits in a pocket with a lot of room to spare. Its sturdy clamshell design means that the camera can live in your pocket so it is always available when you're on the go. The flash is adequate. The zoom range is good. It is a recorder of family events, not an artist's camera -- you can't really control anything about the exposure other than the zoom (so it is not possible to take a portrait with the background blurred out for example).
The photos aren't always sharp in the 4x6 size and I suspect that the focusing isn't always accurate. In general, the pictures don't match a 35 mm SLR even in the small print size. I don't know if this is just the APS film size or some issue of the focus and lens. The photos are certainly acceptable and better than you'd get with a disposable 35 mm and its small size meant that I had it with me to actually take the pictures.
The buttons and display are quite small -- if you need reading glasses you may need them for the display. It has a feature to imprint sayings but it requires you to memorize a table of code numbers to select them (or carry the manual with you!) rendering it about useless.
The camera worked very reliably for one year then suddenly died -- it wouldn't allow me to open the film cassette opening. I shipped it off to Nikon and they wanted $80+ shipping to fix it -- without identifying what was wrong -- this is a standard price, I guess (and newish ones were selling for less than that on eBay) so it's really a disposable camera of sorts.
