I purchased this camera as an alternative to my digital camera, which I did not want to lug to Europe. I shot 10 rolls while traveling abroad, and had no difficulty purchasing APS film. My local processor scanned the images to disc. The 200 ASA film scanned well, the ASA 400 grainy. [However prints from the faster film were good] I had no problem with battery life. Thus the camera did what I purchased it to do. In addition it was light weight. With a 30-60 IX-Nikkor zoom I had no need to take extra lenses. Hence the camera was very portable.
The ability to switch film rolls was handy, as overcast weather conditions often dictated the faster film. The camera/film cassette always worked to return me to the correct portion of the film to maintain the full number of exposures, with no problem of light leakage.
Having been a "prosumer" photographer for 45 years, I believe this camera is a nice balance between a "point and shoot" camera and a mid-range 35 mm SLR. The Nikon lens is sharp, particularly for a zoom. The macro capability allowed me to photograph blooms in the many gardens in England with spectacular results. Using the camera in "auto" mode it is almost impossible to get a poor picture. The auto-focusing works well, and quickly. I have not used it for sports photography yet, but believe that it will be well suited to this task. Taking picture outdoors at night (patio reception) I occasionally had problems getting the camera to take the shot in auto mode, but this is a minor complaint.
The ergonomics of this camera are excellent, at least for right-handers. The built in flash is of the "pop-up" variety, so you do not get unwanted outdoor fill in flash. There is no hot shoe for external electronic flash (however there is an optional slave unit), however there is a threaded slot for a tripod.
All of the features I experimented with worked: self-timer, manual aperture/speed settings, Classic/H or 9:16 ratio/Panorama formatting (a so what if you do your own processing/dark room work), macro/zone (flowers/ people, landscapes, night)focusing and zoom. This is a very reliable, easy to use, and satisfying piece of equipment.
