Ironcladd's Full Review: Nikon COOLPIX L6 Digital Camera
Nikon is one of the most respected camera makers in the world, and they produce some fine products. Nikon was my late father’s favorite brand of camera. Migrating into the digital camera era has been a bumpy ride for me, as I still have my 35 mm SLR film cameras (my Pentax ME Super and SF10). However, I live and work in China, and the latter two cameras are pretty large, particularly the SF10. I had previously purchased a Sony digital camera, but it conked out on me on a trip to Chengdu last year. I needed a replacement quickly, as I was going to Sanya, Hainan Island, for a conference.
I went to a technology bazaar here in Shenzhen (Hua Qiang Bei, to be precise). I didn’t have a huge budget for a camera, so I needed something affordable and portable. I looked at lots of Sony, Canon, but they were all too expensive. I finally came upon the Nikon Coolpix L6, but was a little nervous about purchasing something like this in China, where things are easily and commonly counterfeited. After testing it out and reading through the Multilanguage instruction booklet and the certificate of authenticity, I did some haggling and got a fair deal. I paid about $75 for the camera, and was pretty pleased. They through in a 2 MB memory card and free batteries with it.
What I Like About the Nikon Coolpix L6.
Size.
This is a very small camera, and can fit in your pocket. When traveling, a portable imaging device is always ideal.
Features.
The Nikon Coolpix L6 has 6.0 megapixels, resulting in very crisp, clear shots. While there are other cameras out there with more megapixels, how many megapixels do you need for a clear shot? For my purposes, 6 megapixels is enough.
It has a 3x optical zoom lens, which will get you closer to your subject. Since I’m not doing any wildlife photography, a 3x zoom is enough for the typical needs of the casual photographer. I took some great beach shots in Sanya with it.
A 2.5 inch liquid crystal display allows you to see what you are shooting, and also has, to the delight of all digital camera owners, playback function to see if you want to keep or scrap the photo. There are many features for editing accessible from the menu function and peering into the 2.5 inch screen. Navigating the various functions needs to be learned, but its pretty intuitive once you press a few buttons. You can choose between different modes, so you can take still shots or movies.
With auto focus, and face priority functions and reduction of red eye, and ISO 800 for low lighting and an auto flash, this camera has all kinds of nifty features.
SD memory cards are standard for this camera, and I’ve used 1, 2 and 4 MB cards without any difficulty.
Two AA batteries (make sure they are the powerful ones, specially designed for digital devices), power this little baby. However, it seems that this little silver beauty is an energy hog, as I seem to have to replace the batteries often. If you use the energizer lithium batteries, you may get one thousand pix of battery life out of it, but if you forget and leave the camera running in your pocket, well, two hundred maybe.
Durability.
I’ve dropped this camera on a couple of occasions, and it still manages to work. I put a strap on it so I can wrap it around my wrist, to prevent such mishaps in the future.
Color.
It’s silver, nice and shiny.
Price.
As I mentioned previously, I paid $75 for this camera, and feel that it is well worth it. I’ve taken two or three thousand shots with it in the past year, and lots of my pix can be seen on my facebook site, or webshots site.
All in all, the Nikon Coolpix L6 camera is a very good little digital camera. It is portable, attractive, has lots of cool features, is durable, and is not too expensive. It doesn’t have the most megapixels in the world, but it has enough to satisfy the casual photographer. Preserve your memories, buy a Nikon.
