| popsrocks's Full Review: FUJIFILM Discovery 312 QD Zoom Date Film Camera |
We have owned three fuji 312zoom cameras in our household in the past two years. Two broke and had to be replaced. So why do I spend my hard earned money and pay $175.00 for another one. Because of ease of use and absolutely great pictures.
Some would think I'm nuts but I find it worth it. It may be weird giving a three star rating and still buying them. It's because I love it and I hate it!
The camera fits just perfect in my hand. It has a nice right hand grip that molds well. What do left handed people do. Do they make left handed cameras?
The fit in my hand is the start. From there my right thumb perfectly reaches and maneuvers the zoom feature. The camera has a 38 to 120mm zoom. It moves nicely and brings things in pretty well. I have found however, that my zoom pictures are not as clear as my regular ones. The zoom is also one of the problems I have with the camera. Right now it does not work. I hit the zoom with my finger and ....nothing. Another thing is that when I turn the camera on via a dial on top the zoom comes all the way out. It won't go back in until you turn it off. I have to keep playing with it till it opens properly.
Another thing that happens is that the front lens cover that should slide apart when the camera is turned on, sometimes fails to do so. Not being an SLR one would not know it is not ready to shoot. I have lost a couple of pictures that way.Somehow these things always seem to go wrong after the warranty is over.
And this guy keeps buying these things? Well I like the auto feature. I take most pictures in this mode. Hey, why else would I buy a point and shoot? I'm basically lazy and don't want to be bothered with gadgets and needles and all this new dang digital stuff.
Ok, so this camera does have some gadgets. But they are easy to use. I use the red eye feature. It completely gets rid of that phenomenon. I also use the built in flash in daylight etc. I use it to get rid of harsh shadows in closeup pictures outside.
Very easy to see and get to is the panorama switch. It's right on the back of the camera and easily seen and used. You can change from regular to panorama at any time. You can switch right back out also.
This camera is very easy to load. Hit a little slide button on the side and the case opens slightly. Just enough room to slide your 35mm canister inside. The camera does the rest. It actually takes the film out of the canister once you close the back. This sets things up so that you take the picture and then the piece of film you just exposed goes into the canister for safekeeping. If you inadvertently open the camera you can't expose what you just shot. Very cool. This also sets up your counter telling you how many shots are left. No more having to figure out how many shots left by thought and mathematics. See I am lazy!
The camera uses a battery that you can get at any camera store but not easily available everywhere else. Be sure, especially when out of town that you have a spare or two. If you are a person who uses the zoom to help frame your pictures you will go through batteries more quickly. There is a nifty little meter in the window on top of the camera that tells the status of the battery. It seems to be very accurate.
The counter that is on the top of the camera is easily read in daylight and dark. You can also set the date on here so it comes out on your pictures.
One thing I don't like is the small lens finder opening. I do well with it but many times when away, I ask a stranger to take a picture of my wife and me with it. They have chopped off our heads often and taken many pictures of that taxi somewhere to our right.
The camera has a screw hole for use with a shoe or tripod. It also has a good and long strap that you can trust not to come off.
The best thing about the camera is the quality of the pictures that come out. When people ask what I use and I tell them it's a point and shoot and not a SLR they are amazed. The photos are great and blow up well.
I had better go out and get another one soon.
