| sebandsophie's Full Review: Olympus Stylus Epic 115 QD 35mm Film Camera |
I bought the Olympus Stylus Zoom 115 back in May 2000 for a total cost of $222.54 (includes tax), 199.95 for the camera plus about $10 for the battery. The reason I bought it was mainly to take pictures of our two year old daughter. Previously, I had been using my parents camera, which was a Konica. The pictures from the Konica were decent but do not compare to those from the Olympus. I intended to buy a Pentax when I began my shopping because I had heard good things about them. However, the salesperson at Ritz Camera Shop told me something very interesting. She told me that the best cameras in the 35mm category were made by Olympus followed by Minolta. Pentax was higher in the Professional category. Supposedly, Olympus uses a lens that is made out of glass as opposed to plastic, which most other brands use. This allows the picture grain to be much more detailed, producing a much more clearer picture. Also, pictures taken in dark light come out much better, which is true. I've taken some night pictures using 800 speed film and was impressed. Features included are:
Quartzdate or time imprinting
Timer
Various Flash options (including night scene and red eye reduction)
Automatic film loading
I have taken many pictures since purchasing this camera and have found it to be an excellent camera. I've found that using Fuji film produces better pictures when it comes to color saturation and for outdoor pictures. Also, 400 or 800 speed film works best with this camera. The red eye function however will reduce the life of your battery but it works fairly well to reduce red eye and is definitely worth it. The turn on feature is a bit different. Instead of a power button, the camera is turned on by sliding the lens cover to the right. This can take a while to get used to but after a while its second nature. The quartzdate feature is also a nice feature. You can have the date come out on the picture at the lower right corner or not have this if you elect to. This is good if you intend on making enlargements and do not want to see the date at the bottom. 35mm cameras have come a long way and now have the ability to produce professional quality pictures. I highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take great pictures but does not want to spend a fortune doing it.
