Pros: Cheap, compact and weatherproof.
Best of all - a spotmeter on a P&S!
Cons: It's not THAT sharp!
The Bottom Line: Great pocket shooter - $80 for F2.8, weatherproofing and compact size. Why not?

| alanmak's Full Review: Olympus Stylus Epic DLX 35mm Film Camera |
I finally purchased the Oly Stylus Epic after hearing about the hyperbole over its amazingly sharp optics. I have read several reviews in which the shooter claimed that the Oly's pics rivaled those from top quality SLRs. Really?!
After shooting three rolls of 400 print film, here's my own opinion:
1. The camera is a decent buy for its price (I paid CAD$110, or about US$80).
2. The camera is, as advertised, quite compact and easy to slip into a pocket to carry around. (You can't shoot if you don't have a camera!)
3. The spotmeter is fantastic. I have found that I am often using the spotmeter to get more control over shadows, foreground exposure, etc.
4. The camera is very easy to use. Take it out of the box, pop in the battery and a roll of film and off you go. The controls are self-explanatory (to anyone who has used a P&S before, anyways).
What about the pics? Well...
1. As expected, indoor shots are atrocious. There is tremendous light falloff from the puny flash. I have found that turning off the flash and using the spotmeter in a brightly lit room yields better results (thanks to the 2.8!)
2. There is a vignetting effect in most flash, and some non-flash pictures. I don't understand why...it's not a zoom lens?!
3. Outdoor, sunny-day pics are reasonably sharp, but not as sharp as my Nikon SLRs (even with zoom lenses attached.)
Perhaps my expectations were too high. I was expecting sharpness comparable to my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens. Not even close.
However, for the price, this camera is worth it as a carry-around, always available shooter.
