Stylus Epic
If you are looking for a small, light, rugged, inexpensive camera that takes great pictures, look no further. I travel a lot on business and get to visit some really nice places. I have an expensive SLR, but I’m reluctant to bring it along on business trips because I need to travel light and I worry about the possibility of it being stolen. I was using disposable cameras for a while, but the quality of the pictures was unreliable. Sometimes they would be good, but all to often they were horrible. I did a little bit of research and selected the Olympus Stylus Epic.
This is an autofocus point and shot camera. It is one of the smallest 35mm cameras that you’ll find. It easily fits in a shirt pocket. Its also water resistance. Don’t take it in the pool, but you don’t have to worry about getting splashed once in a while or getting caught in the rain. I have used it in heavy rain, with an umbrella, and not had a problem. It has a date function, panoramic mode, auto timer, and six flash modes. The optics are what make this camera really stand out. The optics are fantastic. The amount of light that a lens gathers, or speed, is the f number. This is usually on the lens or in the specifications. The smaller the number the better. This camera has a 35mm, f2.8 lens. This is much better than any of the zoom models and most all of the non-zoom. This translates into sharp bright pictures even under less that perfect lighting conditions. The lens also will focus as close as one foot for fantastic close ups. I took the Epic and my SLR on vacation and ended up shooting about half of my pictures with each. I can’t tell which camera was used just by looking at the prints. I’ve shoot 30+ rolls of film to date without a problem. The only thing that I don’t like is the tiny view finder.
