| dboreham's Full Review: Olympus Stylus Epic DLX 35mm Film Camera |
The dreaded cheapo zoom lens is hard to avoid these days in a point'n'shoot camera, which is why I love the Stylus Epic.
The zoom lenses on P'n'S cameras suck. They're slow, which means large depth of field (bad for portrait shots). They have low contrast so the pictures look washed out. They have pincusion distortion so buildings look like they're bent. A mild wideangle is all you need. If you want to "zoom in", enlarge the print.
And so the Stylus Epic stands almost alone as a low cost, light point and shoot camera with a fast fixed focus lens.
We bought ours before a vacation to France because we wanted to travel light and my Nikon boat anchor lens collection is too heavy. The Stylus performed perfectly. We've put probably 50 rolls through it with zero problems. It is rather flimsy in construction, but what can you expect for less than $100 ?
I'd read reports of funky autofocus in this camera, but have not seen anything strange in my use. You do have to be careful to lock focus if the subject is not in the center of the frame. The spot metering is handy.
