I've never been much of a point-and-click kind of a guy. I've always preferred to have full control over my shots, using an SLR. I was pleasantly surprised, however, by the Olympus Stylus Zoom 70 QD—QD standing for Quartz Date. Not only is it easy to use, but it takes good pictures.
The 35mm to70mm zoom lens creates great image quality without any noticeable grain. The aperture is surprisingly small at f6.9 at a full zoom, which accounts for some of the lack of grain and a greater depth of field. This small aperture, however, isn’t small enough when taking panoramic shots in full daylight. Images far away will wash out.
Although the documentation says that you can turn off the flash for special “moody” effects, I don’t recommend it. I recently tried to do that and the shutter just couldn’t respond well enough to make a good picture, even with ASA 400 film.
Since it’s such a small camera, the flash is obviously a little under powered so don’t try to take pictures from across the room. The flash just doesn’t have enough power or dispersion at distances greater than 6-8 feet. You’ll still get a pretty good shot, but only the very center of the image will be illuminated.
I know that I’ve picked out a few of the problems this little camera has, but overall it’s a good product. These problems are mostly a result of it being a point and click, not of it being a bad camera. If you’re not a professional or enthusiast this camera is perfect for you. Vacation snapshots, candid shots, and party pictures are some of the wisest uses for it. Don’t push its limitations and you’ll get sharp, high quality memories to cherish and remember.
