Pros: Durable, Easy, Dead reliable, tons of lenses and accessories, all manual mode switch
Cons: low contrast focusing at f5.6
The Bottom Line: You just cannot go wrong with this camera. Enough automation for total point and shoot effectiveness, yet enough manual configuration for the most fussy of photographers.

| heizenberg's Full Review: Canon EOS Elan IIE Film Camera |
I've had this camera for about 5 years now and have taken pictures with it in various conditions of light, weather and situations. It's an EXCELLENT camera!
The ability to switch to full manual mode for exposure/aperture control is what I tend to use most of the time for unusual lighting conditions. Even all auto modes work really well unless the lighting conditions are really weird. The ability to link the depth-of-field preview to one of the small buttons below the shutter is invaluable. I've found the eye control to be a relatively less useful feature unless you are tracking a moving subject, and then too since it's just three zones (in horizontal or vertical positions). The viewfinder is bright and covers most of the final picture area so that the variance between what you see and what you get is minimal. The ability to quickly switch lenses too is great, although keeping the body and lens opening shielded is a consideration depending on the environmental climatic conditions.
This is definitely one of those cameras that let photographers across all abilities and target subjects use it with high effectiveness. i.e. it caters to all but the most hard-to-get of requirements. The lens mounts are solid and I've had no trouble with them ever. High speed shutter response time is great as well.
The only real complaint I've ever had with this camera is that on using an extension tube with a lens for close-up macro type work, the auto-focus feature is rather useless and hand focusing is necessary. In these situations though the depth of field preview is invaluable since depth of field is rather limited and becomes critical in macro work of this type.
All in all, this is one magnificent inexpensive camera. The only other camera I look forward to now is the Canon 10D, for which I'm hoping and expecting a price drop to the $1K mark late in 2003.
