Benjipc's Full Review: Canon EOS Elan IIE Film Camera
Buying a camera, whether you're a beginner or one of the most advanced professional photographers, takes time. There are single reflex cameras, there are automatic cameras, manual cameras, digital ones, metal ones, plastic...the list goes on and on. For me, the first priority was picture quality. Even if it was going to cost me a lot of money, I wanted a camera that I could trust, one that I could rely on to take good pictures. My experience with picture taking is relatively small. I've had several photography courses in a few schools, so I know HOW to set the make-up of a picture to come out how I'd like the photo to come out, but I've never really been able to find a camera that I could manipulate enough to take the picture I had in mind. There were times when all I wanted was to take a fast, simple picture of a friend, and other times when I wanted to adjust the lighting and speed of the shutter to end up with an exact, complicated picture. This kind of versatility isn't easy to come by, believe me. But, after nearly 2 years of searching, examining, and asking lots of questions, I found the Canon EOS Elan 2. Not only do you have complete manual override, but you also have 5 different programs in the automatic camera mode. You can tell the camera that you're taking a picture of scenery, for example, and the camera will automatically adjust the necessary components to take a quality scenery picture. Similarly, if you want a portrait, there's a portrait mode that will leave you with a fantastic looking single-focus-point picture. Actually, the EOS ELAN 2 is so equipped that the instruction book alone is over 100 pages long! This is certainly one of the camera's set backs, but I think only for those consumers who don't have all that much experience taking pictures and working with good cameras. If, however, you have some practice using a manual camera, and understand most of the concepts that go along with that style camera, the ELAN 2 is a great camera for you. It's solid, sturdy, but not heavy, it is simple to read, fits nicely in your hand, and comes with very complete, easy-to-read (and understand) instructions. It's a great buy. Actually, one of the aspects of the ELAN 2 that deters most people is one of the very features that attracted me to this camera: You need to buy your own, separate, lenses. I think that each person knows what kinds of pictures he/she likes, which one's he/she takes, and I think that they should buy lenses accordingly--not just go with whatever comes cheap. Pictures can last forever, so we might as well put the effort into making them good ones, don't you think? I sure do. And I've found that ELAN 2 does just about everything I could imagine or hope a camera to do! Check it out on Canon's webpage, if you're interested, but I certainly recommend this camera to an intermediate-advanced photographer; its a great value for the money.
