This camera is an excellent place to start the SLR experience. I have been using mine since December 1999 and am very pleased with the performance and image quality. I now have the original 35-80mm zoom and have added a 100-300 Sigma zoom and also a 24mm Sigma superwide II to complete the set. Later on if I feel compelled to upgrade to a more user controlled camera all of the accessories I now have for my QTsi will go straight on to another body. This camera though is bullet proof and is very user friendly and I don't foresee upgrading anytime soon. It will give you the quality of a professional with the ease of a point and shoot.
One of the best things about this camera is that it really is as easy to use as a point and shoot camera, except you can change lenses to suit your needs. Unlike other SLR cameras which tend to be bulky and heavy, the Maxxum QTsi measures only 5.3 x 3.5 x 2.3 inches and weighs 12 ounces without the battery, making it easy to carry and comfortable to use.
The function button layout is designed for quick, positive access by a variety of hand sizes, and both men and women will like the ease in which it can be switched . After a few rolls under your belt you'll be able to change modes when circumstances dictate without even needing to look down to see where the setting is.
There is a choice of 5 different program modes that switch with just a push of a button, in addition to the fully automatic. Portrait Mode, Landscape Mode, Close-Up Mode, Sports Action Mode, and Night Portrait Mode. And if you choose you can manually focus. The Maxxum QTsi features a built-in, pop-up flash (Guide number 39 ft. at ISO 100) which provides coverage for lenses as wide as 28mm. The flash has five modes: AUTO, OFF, FILL-IN (manual fill-flash), RED-EYE REDUCTION, and WIRELESS/REMOTE. In AUTO mode, the flash will pop up and fire whenever needed. For greater flash output and versatility, high-powered Maxxum flash units are available as optional accessories. Also there is a self timer you can set that delays shutter release for 10 seconds so you can be in your own photo.
Other features include continuous film advance that will fire every second with the shutter button pressed all the way down, automatic film loading with automatic rewind when roll is spent, and you can rewind film at any time with the power rewind feature. This is without a doubt the easiest loading camera I have ever used. It never failed to advance to the first frame correctly even once.
The best thing I like about this camera is the fact that it is a true SLR. What you see is what you will get on your print, unlike most point and shoot cameras where you don't see exactly what is in the viewfinder on the photo. The thing I least like is the fact that it is fully automatic, and you don't have a great deal of control of the settings. All in all you really can't go wrong with purchasing this unit. And if ever there comes a time when you would want to upgrade to a more advanced system this Maxxum should hold its value well.
