I've used more point-and-shoot 35mm "idiot-boxes" than I care to remember. But I've used enough Nikons to know there was something better out there. So I broke down and bought a real camera. I purchased the Nikon N60 with a Quantaray 28-80mm zoom AF lens, padded case, batteries and a couple hundred exposures of Kodak Max film for about $480. Not bad, all things considered. The N60 provides tremendous ease of use. Putting the camera in full auto, you can hand it to anyone and have it work just as simply as most point-and-shoots. But with a myriad of more advanced settings, why would you want to? The camera has performed excellently for me under all conditions. From close-up shots of insects on flowers, to night-time long-exposures of the Minneapolis skyline, all of my photos have turned out wonderfully. I would highly recommend the N60 to any aspiring photographer to use as a transition from point-and-shoot to SLR cameras.
