| dkoepke49's Full Review: Pentax ZX-7 Film Camera |
First off, I am biased towards Pentax cameras, so please keep that in mind. I was looking for a camera that could be used as a point and shoot but also gave me the options to learn photography with all manual settings. The ZX-7 was a perfect fit for those requirements.
I would classify this in the mid-range SLRs. I looked at a few Canon's and Nikon's, but because I had some older manual focus Pentax lenses, this was my best bet. You really can use this as a point and shoot camera and not worry about any of the settings and get great pictures. If you get tired of that or want to start learning about apertures, film speeds, exposure settings and shutter speeds, you will not be disappointed with this camera.
In addition to your full auto-mode and full manual-mode, you have several preset modes for a variety of different types of photographs. Landscape and sports each have their own mode.
The downside is, that for those of you wanting some of the more professional features such as depth of view preview and auto-bracketing, you are out of luck. But this is still a very nice camera and will suit almost all your other picture-taking needs.
You will also find tons of older lenses for real low prices on ebay. That makes this body quite a catch as you can use the older manual focus lenses or go to some of the newer ones. Overall, for a point and shoot user to someone wanting to learn more about the basics of photography, this camera should last you a long time and be a great basis for learning. By the time you outgrow this camera, you will probably be looking towards buying a professional model and I hope that you will find Pentax cameras as a great family to stick with!
