| Big_Brother_79's Full Review: Blaupunkt ODc66 Car Speaker |
These Blaupunkt OverDrive ODc66 speakers caught my attention because they were significantly less expensive than other comparable speakers. When I say comparable, I mean with regard to wattage, frequency response, sensitivity, and power range.
Installation
Woofers
These speakers were relatively easy to install. I started by popping off my door cover and unscrewing the old speakers. After taking those out and unplugging them, I just plugged these ones into the wiring that went to the crossover and screwed them into the door opening. Remember that this may not work exactly the same in every car/truck, but I didn't have to drill any holes in the speaker housing surround and all of the hardware necessary came with the speakers.
Crossovers
The crossover was easy to find a place to put. I just attached it to my door frame with a zip tie, and then ran the stock speaker wiring to the input. The woofer output was already run to those speakers, and my final step was the tweeter installation.
Tweeters
The tweeters were not quite as easy to find a place to put. After uninstalling the stock tweeter, I found that the Blaupunkt tweeters would not fit in the stock openings. Included in the speaker kit are "MMTs", or "Multi-Mount Tweeters". They come with a cup that can be installed in a door or other such interior spot. I took out the stock tweeter cover and began to file away enough room to install the multi-mount cups. In order to make them look right, I also had to design a piece that goes behind the multi-mount. This, though, was only because the stock tweeter housings were of a very strange shape and would have left an unsightly hole around the mounting. It looks great now, and at a minimum amount of effort.
Please know that these tweeters will probably mount with no problem in most vehicles. The only reason I had a problem was because my Xterra's tweeter housings are of a strange shape.
The speaker kit also comes with dash-mount adapters, which allow you to fit the tweeters in 3-1/2", 4", 4"x6", 5-1/4", and 6-1/2" openings. That would be a big help if you were trying to fit the tweeters and only had those opening sizes.
After wiring the tweeter to the crossover, I was set to test the speakers.
Testing the Speakers and Adjusting the Crossover
At first, I was surprised by the overpowering high-range that these speakers put out. It seemed like the tweeters were just too overpowering. Then I realized that the crossover has several settings that help you to tune the sound to your liking. After adjusting the crossover frequency level and turning the switchable gain down, I was amazed at the difference. I could hear so much more of the music and the sound was so much more dynamic. The bass and treble were both improved as well. All of this occurred with the stock receiver and without amplifiers, so I could tell that the speakers were much improved rather than another aspect of the system. Also, I am sure that after I replace the unsatisfactory stock receiver unit, the speakers will really shine.
Also, they don't distort until you turn them WAY up. The volume seriously hurt my ears before distortion set in (no, I didn't test for an extended period of time!!). They seem to handle power and volume VERY well.
Workmanship/Quality/Looks
These speakers are designed very well - they seem to be solid and I have not had any performance or quality problems with them after 3 months. The workmanship seems great, and they come with a 1 year warranty.
They also look great, and the silver-colored woofer is a great addition to my interior (even when hidden behind a grille).
