Out of a 1-10 ranking, I'd say the JBL Subwoofers are around a 7 or 8 in quality.. definitely up there in quality and durability.
For an 18" subwoofer, a price of $450 is not that bad for a good quality subwoofer such as JBL. I have installed 2 18" JBL subwoofers hooked to a Rockford 800 watt amp, and with only 800 watts going to the speakers, it is one of the loudest systems I have ever heard and hit around 147 dB, which is many times louder then a gunshot!!
These subwoofers have a die-cast aluminum frame, so these speakers will hold up almost forever. They also have specially laminated cones, so they will maintain their shape regardless of how often and long they are used or abused. They have used this lamination for aerospace engineering and you can have this technology in the trunk of your car.
JBL also claims to have the closest possible symmetry to being a totally 100% perfect circle. This allows virtually no distortion no matter what type of conditions these subwoofers are put through.
Although, this is not the state of the art technology, it is one of the best ones out there and one of the only brands that come as big as 18". Give these a try.
