Status:
I ordered these speakers from onlinecarstereo.com with my Clarion DRX5675 head unit in December of 2000. I've had them for a year now in the rear deck of my 1993 Civic Sedan. They're running off head unit power (45W peak, 18W RMS). I picked them based on their price and positive reviews. I was looking for speakers that would run fine off head unit power with the prospect of amplifying later.
Opening the box:
So they came with all the usual stuff, speaker wire, cutout templates, manual, registration form, etc. The stuff was packaged decently with the speakers held in the box by thick cardboard. They'd probably survive some pretty serious manhandling by the postal service.
Installation:
Installation was a bit more of a pain than I had anticipated. I was installing them in the factory location, but I never had rear speakers in my car before. That meant i had to cut holes in the back and get some speaker covers from the junkyard (the standard ones that come with the speakers probably won't fit your car either because they're designed for a totally flat surface, I had to get Honda ones). That's not a real issue with the speakers themselves though. Installation is pretty straightforward though. If you're replacing factory ones, you just pull out some screws and switch 'em. Depending on the car, you might have to get some adapters (I had to buy Honda adapters to make the Honda plugs fit into the standard plugs on the back of the Polks). Of course, if you're wiring them up to an amplifier or in a car that didn't have a stereo to begin with, you'll probably be using the included speaker wire and possibly the cut-out templates.
First listening:
I installed these speakers after my fronts and head unit, so they were the last thing to go in. The bass and volume coming out of the system was quite a bit more than I had experienced with only two speakers, and I was quite impressed. I noticed I could easily make them distort when cranking the volume up to max (that shouldn't be an issue, however, if you use a crossover and subwoofers).
Overall listening experience:
These speakers provide decent bass, but it can still be considered weak. Consider some 6x9 speakers instead of 6.5" rounds if you don't plan on added subs later and are concerned with bass. At normal listening levels, however, these sound great. They wouldn't distort with the volume at maximum but the bass at minimum, which is a fairly good indication of how they might sound under a low power standalone amplifier.
Recommendations:
For the serious audiophile on a budget, I would recommend these speakers with 2 lower power amps (one for speakers and one for subs) with crossover and sub for low end, but for those on an even tighter budget, I would recommend 6x9's instead. Of course, If you're like me and don't want to change the factory locations, then this is the way to go. If you have 6.5" holes in the front, and these are within your price range, then this is definitely the way to go. These generally run about $20.00 more than Polk's own EX line, but I would say they are probably worth more than $20.00 extra in terms of the sound quality.
