| basilisk4's Full Review: Polk Audio dX6 Car Speaker |
Earlier this year, when my beloved 1989 Toyota Corolla died, I ended up getting another Corolla...only this one is a 1999. Though I had the first Corolla for about 4 1/2 years and I always wanted a better stereo system, I simply couldn't justify spending hundreds of dollars on a stereo in an older car. It's just one of those things, I guess. There's also the fact that my old Corolla was only designed to hold relatively small speakers, without tearing it up.
So, when I got my new Corolla, the very next weekend I went to Circuit City to take a look at some new stereo equipment. My CD player was only about 6 months old at the time and is an Alpine 35 watt x 4 channel unit, so there was no need to replace it -- I took it out of the old car before we got rid of it and had it put into the new one.
Speakers, however, were going to be a different story. I had a pair of 5 1/4" Pioneers that performed admirably for over 3 years, but I was ready for something new...and the Cerwin Vega 4" speakers I had in front in the old car were too small to put into the new one. When I got to Circuit City, I looked around for a few minutes and then went over to one of the sales counselors to ask some questions.
For those of you who don't know about the "Open Box" buys that electronics stores tend to have from time to time, they're often a great place to start your search. As it turned out, I was extremely lucky that day -- the two sets of car speakers they had as open-box items on that particular day were a couple of great pairs of speakers that just happened to be the two sizes I was looking for.
The larger set of speakers I bought were the Polk dX6, a pair 2-way speakers with 6 1/2" drivers and 1" tweeters. The dX6 each handle an impressive 130 watts maximum and 40 watts RMS (continuous input). For those of you who don't really understand what a 2-way speaker is, it's basically 2 speakers in one. The idea here is that placing a tweeter atop the woofer of a mid-range speaker allows for much greater range than a typical mid-range speaker.
After having had these speakers for over 6 months, I have been very impressed and completely satisfied. Compared to any other speakers of the same size, I have found that these speakers produce more bass with less distortion. Believe it or not, the raised tweeters do seem to add significantly to the speakers' total range. The result is crisp, clear sound across all types of music.
While I'm not sure that I would pay the exorbitant prices which Polk Audio speakers typically go for, I would certainly take a good, long look at their products the next time I'm in the market for high-quality car audio products.
