| csprague's Full Review: Polk Audio dX9 Car Speaker |
I own a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville SE. When I first got the car it had the stock Delco 4-speaker system. I had a portable CD player with a car kit. Well it played CDs, it just sounded horrible. No highs or lows to speak of. I spend $220 and bought a Panasonic MXE CQ-DPX105 head unit and Blaupunkt PCxg462s (for the front doors) off eBay. The head unit is awesome (it was top-of-the-line a few years ago and retailed for around $600). Listening to the Blaupunkts now I'd say they're ok speakers (rather have a component set) but back then I thought they were awesome. I then bought a pair of Kenwood KFC-6907 6x9s for the back at a $100.
The KFCs were four ways. They had tons of highs and no bass and little midrange. My stock Delcos had better bass and mids. I was running them off the head unit's 50x4 amp and they sounded horrible. I went back to the store and tried to return them. They didn't want to do it but I finally got them to give me a set of Polk dx9s (the best they had) in exchange for the Kenwoods plus another $100. So I didn't get the greatest deal on these speakers.
Once I installed them in my car, I forgot about the price I had paid. Beautiful sound! The 3-way is perfectly balanced. I started hearing things I had never heard before on CDs. A month later I bought a Rockford Fosgate Punch 120a2 for them and now they sound ever better. When you're shopping for speakers I cannot say enough, buy quality. The dx9s are quality, and I would highly recommend them to anyone.
