| MTI320th's Full Review: JVC KD-LX1 Car CD Player |
I bought this unit to replace the stock CD player in my '99 Eclipse. I bought it on my past experience with JVC products (which I've been using for over 11 years) and also due to it's now-you-see-me-now-do-don't feature. I am not entirely happy with this product.
First, I'll start with the ergonomics of the unit. If you have a dash that tilts back slightly (like those in Eclipses), you cannot read the silver buttons that control the unit. I have to physically sit up in my seat to know if I'm pushing the correct button sometimes. The idea of the volume and track toggle buttons on the sides in great, BUT you will put smudge marks all over the face of the unit with your fingertips if you don't push directly on those buttons. I don't know about you, but if I pay about $250-$300 for a CD player, I don't want smudges and fingerprints all over it.
Next, the features. I like the BBE feature alot. In fact, I LOVE IT!!!!!!! This feature adds so much depth and dynamics to the music that I wonder how I lived without it for so long. You can change the display to add a cute little nuance to your interior. I prefer the "Highway" display myself. The cruise feature is pretty nifty too. It's raises the volume automatically by detecting the differences in the vehicle's engine RPMs. This is great for stop-and-go driving because I don't have to turn up the volume when engine or road noise increases. The unit does it for me. The display is easy to read, but once again if your dash tilts back slightly you get a really strange hologram-like effect which is extremely annoying at night. Also, my unit does this wacky hide-and-seek thing with the control panel when it gets cold. This especially sucks on those cold mornings when I start the car up for the first time. Normally a person has to wait for the car to warm up, but I have to wait for my CD player to warm up before it will act right. Installation of the unit was a breeze. I did it myself and it took about 5 minutes to get the unit up and running and all the little features set to where I wanted them.
Lastly, overall view. If you want a CD player that looks cool and impresses your girlfriend/wife, this is the one for you. It even reads "SEE YOU" on the display when you turn your car off. Neat, but not really necessary. I wish you could make up your own personal message. Oh well. Not a bad product, but hindsight being 20/20 I would have bought something else. GIMMICKS, GIMMICKS, GIMMICKS! That is what the KD-LX1 is all about!
