As a Car Audio Employee at Best Buy, I have compared this product
with others in a similar price range. I am aware of its strengths
and weaknesses, as well as reliability issues. (read on...)
The JVC LX-1 Kameleon is the older model of the cd-deck.
(The most recent version is the LX-100).
The deck puts out about 17w x 4 RMS, with a decent sound quality.
This radio is all about looks. The bottom panel folds out when
listening to music. When you need to insert a CD, the whole
face slides down, and you can put a disc in. When turned off,
the entire face blacks out, and 'disappears'.
The LX-1 model does *not* come with a remote. If you need one,
get the LX-3, or the newer version such as the LX-100.
This radio is all about looks. Yes, it looks cool. Very cool.
However, there are many other radios out there that sound much better
and look just as good.
Here are the reasons NOT to buy this radio:
1) The motor used to slide the face up and down on this radio
WILL eventually break. It is used quite heavily, especially
since everytime you want to play a CD you have to use it!
2) The face is NOT detachable. Yes, it does black out, but thieves
can easily see the radio. I have had tons of customers coming
in to replace them from theft.
3) Poor user interface. The buttons are all on the bottom panel
and are very difficult to see. The labeling is tiny and unclear.
Also, the controls to change stations/tracks is located to the
far right of the radio, making it a long reach without a remote
control.
4) Only average sound quality. For this kind of money, you should
be getting a much better radio. This radio only comes with a
single pair of RCA preouts, which are only 1.5v a piece. For
this price, you would expect a dual pair of at least 4v outputs.
5) Customer complaints of skipping... I cannot confirm this.... but
I'll just warn you!
Overall, this radio is meant all for flashy looks.
Please take your time and put your money into a radio
that performs. If you like flashy looks, check out pioneer
or alpine!
