| Mr.Childs's Full Review: JVC KD-MX3000 |
I've been searching for a cheap way to play mini disks in my car and get great sound. I'll admit that all mini disk receivers cost more than their CD equivalent but a mini disk receiver still made more sense to me than buying a cheap CD head unit and a Sony mini disk changer ($449.95). Finally I've found a solution, A head unit that plays both! While I love the mini disk I'm not ready to trash my CD collection. And it would be a real drag if I was showing off how my system turns up the volume to match the engine noise and can title radio stations and CD's and my friend pulls out his favorite CD, what d you say to that," Uh sorry, the salesman said MD's were the format of the future." I don't think so.
When I first found this unit in Crutchfield I couldn't take my eyes off it, that is until they drifted to the price tag. JVC has this unit listed at $750.00! that's over 2 1/2 times the price of the equivalent CD model. I told myself that it was like buying two units, but I thought that was the beauty of a combined Headunit is that you weren't paying for two different products. For the time I had to be content to just wish and dream.
Now that Crutchfield has dropped their price about two hundred and fifty dollars this unit can finally be a reality. What a difference a couple of hundred dollars make. Instead of being attainable by only the richest audiophiles, for $499.95 this unit could be a reality for you.
One more thing. The usefulness of a car head unit depends a lot on what kind system your using to control with it. Most headunits in this price range have three preamplifier outputs. This unit only has two, But it does have one RCA audio input which is a lot more useful to me than one more output. Most peoplewho can't afford an after market Headunit use a tape adapter to get CD sound through their system but this has always bothered me because I knew my CD's and MD's would never sound better than the tape deck in my Volvo head unit. I would be happy never to hear a cassette tape again in my life but my sister still can let go of a few trusty cassettes. with this JVC Headunit I can hook up a Walkman through the back of the head unit while she's home for three months during the summer.
What a deal a powerful headunit that can play your favorite formats without having to buy separate components.
